2017 Pumpkin Drop Information & Registration

pd2016

It’s time again for our annual Pumpkin Drop! We look forward to this family event every year. It’s a great opportunity to test your flying skills, learn about flying, meet new people, and just plain immerse yourself into the fun world of General Aviation. Everyone here at St. Charles County Smartt Field gets involved, including our friends at EAA Chapter 32 and the Commemorative Air Force. The EAA guys will be grilling up some hamburgers and hot dogs as part of a box lunch offer. Again this year the CAF is entering both their B-25 Mitchell bomber and TBM-3E Avenger torpedo bomber. Each plane can hold a bomb bay full of pumpkins, so our Cessna’s are no match for carrying capacity. But who cares – it’s not every day you can watch these veterans go to work on a target. Come on out and join the fun!

When will the CAF aircraft be bombing the target with pumpkins?

The CAF’s B-25 Mitchell and TBM-3E Avenger are expected to make their bombing runs at 1:30 pm. Get here early to meet the crew, inspect both aircraft up close, and take some memorable pictures.

Do I have to be a pilot to participate?

Anyone can participate, whether they’re a pilot or not. But if you’re not a pilot space is limited (we only have so many instructors available), so get here early on the day of the event to get signed up. Be aware that besides the entry fee, standard rental rates and instructor fees apply.

Can I use my own plane in the competition?

As long as you can safely chuck a pumpkin out of your aircraft, you can use your own! Otherwise you can rent one of our planes. Standard rental rates apply.

Are there any special discounts being offered?

We’ll be offering a fuel discount for participants using their own aircraft.

I’m a pilot. Can I compete on my own?

To be safe, a minimum of 2 fliers are required – the pilot (who’s only job is to deliver the bomb load over the target) and the designated bombardier.

What does it cost to participate?

The overall cost will vary depending upon your needs. The cost to enter the competition is $20. For this price you get three pumpkins and three attempts to hit the target. You can enter as many times as you’d like. If you’re a pilot in need of a plane and are checked out in our aircraft, we’ll have planes set aside for you. Standard rental rates apply. For those who aren’t a pilot but want to participate, we can accommodate you too! Planes and instructors will be standing by. Your cost will be the entry fee + plane + instructor. The cost for plane and instructor are a function of your time in the air. Figure one entry (with its three passes over the target) takes roughly 30 minutes to complete. At standard rental and instruction rates + the entry fee the cost would be about $108.

What does the winner get?

First place gets 50% of the entry fees collected, second place gets 35%, and third place gets 15%. A point system is used to determine the winner, and the crew with the lowest number of points wins. A point is given for each foot (up to 50 feet) from the center of the target.

Do I have to register ahead of time?

No, you can register on the day of the event. However, the number of entrants is limited so¬† if you want to guarantee a spot in the lineup you will need to pre-register. Although pre-registering guarantees you’ll get in the rotation, get here by 9:00 am to get a good spot in the lineup.

Can I request a specific time to fly?

Specific times are not available. Everything is on a first come, first serve basis. Remember, pre-registering guarantees you a spot in the lineup but the earlier you arrive, the sooner you’ll get in the air!
